i wish to say that it's good for us to go back in history sometime and get a perspective. i have here a copy of some copious notes from a meeting that was held in savannah, georgia, january 12th, 1865. a meeting called by general sherman and secretary of war stanton. after they had marched to atlanta, burned down atlanta because the confederacy would not give up, they decided that upon burning down atlanta, that they would march to the sea. and as they marched to the sea, these ex slaves followed them. sherman asked secretary of war stanton, what should we do with these ex slaves? well, secretary of war stanton responded, wait, general, until we get to savannah. when we get there, we will call a meeting with the black preachers of savannah and get some advice from them as to what course we should take. the long short of it, friends, is this. that in that meeting general sherman asked reverend gary son frazier, what do you feel the union owes these ex slaves? reverend frazier said, general, i can't speak for everybody. but at least for me and my house, i feel that we should

and it's a tradition journalist use a lot with cops. we do a police ride along. invite them to do a ride along to step in your shoes and walk in your shoes for a while and really again try to again get the stories that you see everyday out there to the general public. so that's your mission for this year should you choose to accept it. and then i just wanted kind of, you know, in that mode, and that's part of the way i wrote this book to was to look at getting real people's stories and again j ramon, the public defender in georgia was great because they let me follow a trial for a week and a half in georgia and it was great to bring to the public what it was like to be involved in a capital murder trial. a guy who was falsely imprisoned for 20 years. he was a very eloquent storyteller himself. i'm going to read a short passage about him. today bright 56 six on the porch in new orleans 7th ward and rest on the head of his yellow dog. it's 2012 and he often finds himself amusing over time lost, time wasted. it feels like a minute that i have been out here. it took

earlier this month movements planned and use a workshop around heath rirpz with to police. where we introduced the review to the community. this being our fifth summit based on the police and public relationships we've educated a lot of what the parents feel to be healthy relationships between youth and police. we work closely with the youth commission on a general order and have been doing this for 5 years to make sure that the youth and public voices is where our community members are effected. during our most recent summit we had four officers in attendance that work on housing and poverty who assisted in this workshop. and the pamphlets and other general information and the ruling role of the school community. at burn heights center we're striving for public accountant ability for the community. where the language binds the s r o sz to the contact is important. school officers should be a rows. it shouldn't be a threat to any student and m l o should frame the model relationship that us the community want to see between the public and police >> thank you. >> thank you a

thank you all police commission for having us here. and also i want to thank the community members here i know that there are folks from the center and director hicks of the organization cc and also thank you to captain for the author update on the strategies that the san francisco pd is. so just to give you agreeing a little bit of background. it's a voter mandated body that advise the bodies on the needs of san francisco. and since then we've had a focus on juveniles issues including juvenile and police issues. one of our collaborations is the citizen complaints have been to the police code which is not considered a model among the codes. and just to supervise the recommendations to the public in march 2012 the police commission held the first youth meeting that addressed the relations p we heard from over 70 youth. they speak to the police effort and we heard from elementary schools kids who loved meeting with the police officers and also where the areas could be improved. and there were 3 recommendations which were present at the a
